While you watched India’s world cup match against Afghanistan, another Indian team scored a dramatic victory in a sport India has no history in. Yes, India has a women’s rugby team and it just beat Singapore in an Asian Championship division 1 match, finishing third in the competition. The tournament was a qualifier for the world cup scheduled in 2021.

India has been taking gentle but progressive strides in sports other than cricket off late. Women’s rugby is a valuable addition to the list. This was a team of spirited girls who were representing India. But their quest was barely followed. The country has been religiously engrossed in cricket. But a stellar and unexpected performance in rugby 15s meant they snatched their spot in headlines, and rightly so.
