World football in shock as India holds Asian champions Qatar to a draw
"whenever the formidable Qatari attackers managed to slip past the defence, there was a man mountain waiting for them in Gurpreet Singh Sandhu"
103rd rank Indian team was facing 62nd rank Qatari side in their FIFA world cup qualifier match in Doha. Not many football experts gave India a chance against the Asian powerhouse. And to further diminish Indian hopes captain fantastic, the iconic Sunil Chhetri wasn’t available for the crucial game.
The match was entirely played between the piercing Qatari attack and India’s defence line. And whenever the formidable Qatari attackers managed to slip past the defence, there was a man mountain waiting for them in Gurpreet Singh Sandhu. They just couldn’t get through him. He was captaining the side and perhaps that sparked something in him. He was at his very best. And his best proved to be too much for the famed Qatari attack. After a gruelling play of 90 minutes the score line read 0-0.
The grandeur of the victory can be imagined from the fact that India is just the fourth team Qatar has failed to score against this year. The others include Argentina, Brazil and Columbia.
The team was lolloping on the field. The coach was ecstatic. And the mere 8 % Indian supporters in the stadium were roaring as if they had just won. And won’t they? Their team had just created history. The world has been told loud and clear that the sleeping giant is now done with slumber. Indian football is now competitive like never before.
The disappointment on the face of Qatari coach was very apparent. In a post-match interview he expressed his awe for the Indian goalkeeper. India would be facing Banglandesh next in Kolkata and the Indian coach Stimac Igor has requested fans to come in numbers. And the way team is going it doesn’t seem impossible.
Here are some of the best reactions from fans who are on the moon right now.
About last night: SIMPLY HISTORIC! The result itself means nothing (it is just 1 point) but the significance is HUGE - I wonder how many ‘blue ticks’ and ‘celebs’ who are busy posting when a World Cup is on (bcos they just LOVE football) are posting today? #QATIND pic.twitter.com/5ITBS97Jnw— Joe Morrison (@joefooty) September 11, 2019
Xavi had predicted that Qatar would win the Asian Cup earlier but little did he foresee that most of his Al Sadd players would be depressed after the game against India, last night. #QATIND— Vinod Ramnath (@NaanumEngineer) September 11, 2019

India have played like a South American side today , the resolve and commitment shown till the end promises a very bright future. D scoreline suggests a draw but to every Indian fan, this result is a huge victory, a result that shows the progress made by the Indian team #QATIND pic.twitter.com/4EPldpHUMm— Shephin Mathew (@trequartista_12) September 10, 2019
